Gems exhibiting a single bright band are known as cat's eyes. This optical phenomenon, called chatoyancy, occurs when light reflects off parallel bundles of tiny hollow tubes or fibrous crystals within the gemstone. When the stone is cut into a cabochon (domed top, flat bottom), the reflected light is focused into a bright band on the surface, which is perpendicular to the direction of the fibers or hollow tubes.
